Lovesickness refers to an affliction that can produce negative feelings when deeply in love, during the absence of a loved one or when love is unrequited.

The term "lovesickness" is rarely used in modern medicine and psychology, though new research is emerging on the impact of heartbreak on the body and mind.

Interesting story in history:

In 294 BC, Antiochus son of Seleucus Nikedar married his stepmother, Stratonice, daughter of Demetrius Poliorcetes.

The ancient sources report that his elderly father reportedly instigated the marriage after discovering that his son was in danger of dying of lovesickness.

Antiochus is bedridden, suffering from a sickly languor. His father, King Seleucus, is at the foot of the bed in the dark. To save his son, he called on the great physician Erasistratus.

The latter is beside him, taking his pulse: his left hand on Antiochus' wrist. The doctor asked that the women of the palace present themselves, one by one, before Antiochus. When Stratonice's turn comes, the young prince's pulse quickens, Erasistratus then raises his right hand, index finger pointing to the "cause of the disease".

Erasistratus convinced the king to give up the beautiful Stratonice to his son, and the prince recovers. Stratonice bore five children to Antiochus.

Modern Research:

Frank Tallis, a researcher of love and lovesickness, suggests in his 2005 article that lovesickness occurs when one is "truly, madly, deeply" in love and should be taken more seriously by medical professionals.

Tallis includes a list of common symptoms of lovesickness in the following:

Ø Mania - an abnormally elevated mood or inflated self-esteem

    Ø Depression, hopelessness, or helplessness

Ø Nausea
Ø Tearfulness
Ø Insomnia, which may lead to fatigue
Ø Lack of concentration
Ø Loss of appetite or overeating
Ø Stress
ØObsessive-compulsive disorder - preoccupation and hoarding valueless but superstitiously resonant items
Ø Dizziness and confusion
Ø Body tremors, intrusive thoughts, or frequent flashbacks
Ø Mood swings

According to Tallis, many symptoms of lovesickness can be categorized under the DSM-IV and the ICD. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a symptom of lovesickness because it includes a preoccupation. A further study conducted by Italian psychiatrist Donatella Marazitti found that people who were in the early romantic phase of a love relationship had their serotonin levels drop to levels found in patients with OCD. This level is significantly lower than that of an average or healthy person.

Strong family links and responsibilities . They need a familial, comforting atmosphere: fear of losing [familial] stability and tendency to take major responsibility for family and friends, always puts family first. Defines himself as a 'family man', will do everything to keep the family bound together; thus does not say what's in his heart, so as not to arouse conflicts.

In relationships they crave the same proximity. Allen writes: "Lovesick"- cannot stop thinking about the ideal woman." Unattainable love, as in Saccharum. [Both women and love are seen as unearthly ideals rather than real ones; the female element is exaggerated in the early stages of Column Four ] Consequently, there's a lot of sadness and despondency in the remedy, which alternates with irritability (similar to Kola). It might be related to the fear of being flooded and lost by the feminine partner in a real relationship, so prefers to fantasise instead.
